Additional Information

A thorough cleaning of your teeth, gums, and mouth is one of the most important stages of your dental checkup. This is a simple and painless process that involves:

  • The removal of plaque and tartar between your teeth and gum line.
  • Polishing your teeth with a high-powered electric toothbrush to remove residual tartar.
  • Expert flossing.
  • Fluoride treatment.

For patients with gum disease, we also offer periodontal root planing and scaling. This periodontal hygiene therapy is a deep cleaning that involves two parts. The first part is, scaling which is the removal of plaque and tartar. The second part is root planing in which the roots of your teeth are smoothed out, to help your gums reattach to your teeth.

Typically a general cleaning will last around 60 minutes while one of our qualified hygienists gently cleans the surfaces of your teeth. The process rids your teeth of any built up tartar, plaque, and stains by using an ultrasonic water scaler and various manual scalers. The hygienist will then carefully examine your mouth for any existing or potential problems such as decay or periodontal disease.
