What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction involves carefully removing a tooth from its socket in the bone. At One Dental, our dentists recommend extractions when other, less invasive treatments aren’t effective or when keeping the tooth could harm your overall oral health.
There are several reasons why a tooth might need to be pulled. This includes severe tooth damage that can’t be repaired, troublesome wisdom teeth that cause pain or infections, and cases where removing a tooth is necessary to prepare your mouth for other dental treatments like braces or implants.
While losing a tooth might sound worrying, extracting a problematic tooth can actually protect your smile by preventing further damage, infection, or crowding. It’s often the best way to keep your mouth healthy in the long run.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to erupt in the back corners of a normal adult mouth, usually between 17 and 25 years of age.
Wisdom teeth are often removed because they can cause problems like crowding, pain, infections, or damage to nearby teeth. Since they’re the last teeth to come in, there’s sometimes not enough room in the mouth for them to grow properly, leading to complications that make removal the best option for maintaining oral health.
The Tooth Extraction Process
Tooth extraction is a routine procedure. Before starting, your dentist will numb the area with local anesthesia to ensure you're comfortable throughout.
Depending on the tooth’s condition, the extraction may be simple or require a surgical approach to gently loosen and remove it. After the procedure, you’ll receive detailed care instructions to support healing and reduce the risk of complications.
